Burial Practices in Mesopotamia

The deceased in Mesopotamia were commonly buried in cemeteries with some personal possession. In later period became more common burial in a family vault under the dwelling house. The tomb of Puabi often referred as the royal tomb (although none of the buried is on the Sumerian King List) dating from about 2600 BC is one of the most famous and intriguing Mesopotamian tombs. The tomb excavated by Sir Leonard Wooley at Ur in the first half of the 20th century revealed that the queen (?) Pu-Abi was buried along with five armed soldiers who were apparently voluntary sacrificed. However, such burial rituals were very rare in ancient Middle East.
